Where to Look?
In short, everywhere.
Think you’d make a great newspaper columnist? Ask. I got my job as a regular newspaper columnist for a local city newspaper by asking. I saw a new “community” newspaper was about to launch so I sent the editor samples of my writing and a pitch for my column. The pay isn’t huge for most newspaper columns, but if you can get syndicated it can be a lucrative form of income.
Is there a blog or website you would love to write for but they never put out calls for writers? Ask. Just because they don’t place ads online doesn’t mean they don’t hire freelance writers. If you’re a good fit, they might just consider your request. Send them a note letting them know how much you enjoy their site and that you would like to write for them. Include a few good samples of your work. You never know.
